This weekend was my first trip to a road course in a Sprint Cup car. After having a lot of success in the Xfinity Series on the road courses I was ready to challenge myself in NASCAR’s elite series. My best finish in my rookie season in 2011 came at Road America with an 11th place finish so I had my goal set to try to position myself for a top ten finish.

The weekend started off with two rounds of practice on Friday. Everyone at Premium Motorsports put in a ton of effort to have a great race at Watkins Glen. As practice began, we took to the track and noticed quickly that we were having brake problems. I would lose my brakes completely on the race track which is an issue that needed to be fixed immediately. However this had cost us much needed track time prior to qualifying.

As we rolled into qualifying the following day we bolted brand new brake rotors, calipers, and master cylinder to eliminate any issue there could possibly have been. We would end up qualifying 43rd for Sunday’s race but it was a great feeling knowing we had fixed our brake issue.

I knew the race would be a challenge with some of the struggles we had faced through out the weekend but I knew that everyone at Premium Motorsports would fight all race to get the best finish as we could. As the green flag flew we picked up a few spots right away and settled inline. We fought overall grip the beginning of the run because we started off on scuff tires. We ended up falling a lap down which trapped us behind a lot of cars that we were faster than. As we bolted sticker tires on the rest of the race, we picked up speed tremendously and made a lot of progress to end the race. Unfortunately we were just stuck behind everyone a lap behind and we would settle for a 38th place finish.

I always enjoy racing at these road courses and we all had hoped for a much better finish. Some unfortunate circumstances kept us from a much better finish but overall I’m happy with the weekend and I always have fun behind the wheel! Next week I can’t wait to take to the big 2 mile race track at Michigan. We will run the new drag package again and I’m excited to see how the cars will drive this weekend.
